Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative Gathers Stakeholders for Plan of Action

PHILADELPHIA, May 29, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Thursday, May 31st, the Family Planning Council's Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative will sponsor a Stakeholder Meeting from 9 AM – 2 PM in Houston Hall, 3417 Spruce Street at the University of Pennsylvania. Community leaders, national and local experts in the field of pregnancy prevention, Mayor Michael Nutter, State Senator Vincent Hughes and young people will meet to discuss the complex and multi-faceted issue of teen pregnancy. 

In early 2011, the Family Planning Council launched a new Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative (TPPI).  The Council is one of only nine organizations in the U.S. selected to participate in President Obama's national Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative. Funded through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Office of Adolescent Health, the TPPI aims to reduce teen birth rates by 10% over the next four years in West and Southwest Philadelphia. Currently, these communities experience a teen birth rate that is almost twice the national average. 

"The reduction of teen births will happen only if we get the whole community involved," says Tiffany Thompson, Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative Program Manager. "We are working hard to create a ripple effect in the community around this issue until everyone in West and Southwest Philadelphia is a part of or has heard of this initiative."

The Family Planning Council is a private, non-profit organization working to ensure access to high-quality, comprehensive, reproductive and related health and prevention services to primarily low-income individuals and families.
