Telecom Executive Receives Major Statewide Recognition
Award celebrates distinguished service to consumers and telephone industry
HERSHEY, Pa., July 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Last evening, the Pennsylvania Telephone Association (PTA) honored Tom Lager of Hacklebernie (outside Jim Thorpe), for his outstanding contributions to the telecommunications industry, the Association, and the customers he serves. Mr. Lager is the vice president of operations and general manager at Palmerton Telephone Company in Palmerton, PA. He is a current member of the PTA's board of directors and served as chairman from 2008-2010. He was honored with the award at a ceremony following PTA's annual banquet as part of PTA's 109th annual conference being held July 17-20 at The Hotel Hershey in Hershey, PA.
Says Steven Samara, PTA president, "Whether it has been serving on the PTA Board and committees, contributing to various task forces, or simply sharing issues and concerns in order that other member companies may be alerted, Tom has been an unselfish advocate for the entire association membership."
Mr. Lager joined Palmerton Telephone in February of 1970 as a combination man. During his 39 years with the company he has been assistant manager of corporate development and planning, chief engineer, outside plant and equipment engineer and PBX man.
A graduate of Penn State University with a degree in Electrical and Electronics Technology, Tom started his career at Western Union Telegraph Company.
Mr. Lager has two grown children, Nathan and Angi. Outside of work, he enjoys collecting and restoring vintage radios, fishing, hunting and camping with his son, race walking to keep fit and, along with his daughter, competing in races. Mr. Lager is also involved with the Diligent Fire Company and the Lehighton Ambulance station.
Distinguished service awards were inaugurated in 2002, during the Association's 100th anniversary year, to honor those pioneers who have helped pave the way to make PTA and the telecommunications industry in Pennsylvania a critical component of the state's infrastructure.
PTA represents the 35 local telephone exchange providers that serve nearly 8 million business and residential lines throughout the Commonwealth. Born under a different name in the early 1900's and today based in Harrisburg, PTA has provided Pennsylvania's smallest and largest telephone companies with a clear voice for more than a century. Committed to the future of telecommunications, the PTA serves as an informational clearinghouse for its members, as an advocate with state regulators and legislators and as a watchdog of consumer protection.
