RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Tempus Jets partnered with World Pediatric Project this holiday season to transport a newborn baby from Belize to Virginia for life-saving surgery. The newborn, a boy named Shamir, was born with esophageal atresia (EA), a condition where the esophagus is incomplete and does not connect to the stomach, causing inability for the child to eat or swallow. If left untreated, the condition is fatal.
World Pediatric Project, a nonprofit organization that provides tertiary diagnostic and surgical care to children in Central America and the Caribbean, contacted Tempus Jets for its assistance in the transport of baby Shamir following his birth on December 18 in Corozal, Belize. The aircraft used for the transport is managed and operated by Tempus. Donated by a Tempus client who wishes to remain anonymous, the plane was flown from Virginia to Belize on December 26 by Tempus chief pilot Bob Lake.
Tempus has partnered with the nonprofit organization twice before, providing aircraft and assistance for various operations taken on by WPP. "We were honored to utilize the aviation assets of Tempus to help the World Pediatric Project team accomplish their life-saving mission," said Scott Terry, founder and CEO of Tempus Jets. "We look forward to following baby Shamir's progress and hope to partner with WPP again in the future."
Baby Shamir is currently at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University receiving intravenous feeding to strengthen him prior to reconstructive surgery. Surgery is anticipated to occur within the next ten days. "Shamir did great and is stable and doing well," said Dr. David Lanning, medical director for World Pediatric Project and surgeon-in-chief at CHoR. "We will give him IV nutrition for a couple of weeks before we do the repair of his esophagus. Despite the odds being very stacked against him when he was born, he has an excellent prognosis and should have more than 70 years of life ahead of him."
