Ten Outstanding Students Chosen to Travel to China With People to People Ambassador Foundation Scholarships
Students Gain a Global Perspective at 2013 International Student Leadership Summit
SPOKANE, Wash., May 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ambassadors Scholarship Foundation, through the support of People to People Ambassador Programs, will send 10 students on a full-scholarship program to attend the 2013 International Student Leadership Summit in Beijing.
The People to People Beijing Leadership Summit is a combination of visits to iconic destinations like the Great Wall, Imperial and Summer Palaces and world famous silk market, accompanied by intensive Chinese language training, classes in classic Chinese arts, as well as leadership and personal growth curriculum. Students will be traveling from July 12-21, 2013.
Over 1,000 students from 29 countries will participate in the 2013 Summit. Students will live in on-campus housing at a prominent Beijing high school. Throughout the summit, participants will have the opportunity to test their language skills with local Chinese counterparts and cook and eat authentic Chinese food.
The students from the United States have been selected in partnership with Washington Foster Care, Boy Scouts of America, YMCA and Youth 'N Action.
"I am honored to be selected. I never would have been able to participate in a program like this without the assistance of the Ambassadors Foundation," said Brendan Smith of Spokane, WA. "I'm an aspiring advocate for better research and services for people with mental health issues, and a photographer. I hope to gain leadership skills on this trip that I can put into practice when I get home. Being exposed to such amazing sites, culture and people, while visiting Beijing will definitely help me with my career in the future."
With strong global attention focused on China at the moment, the program continues to grow in popularity. This year's attendees from the United States are tasked with making a presentation to other international delegation members about a particular facet of American lifestyle or culture. Preparing and executing a business-style presentation is part of the leadership building curriculum inherent in the program.
"The 10 students we selected will undergo a series of trainings prior to their departure to prepare them as student leaders representing the United States," said Ryan Oelrich, Executive Director of the Ambassador Foundation. "While all of the applicants were exceptional this year, the finalists all have amazing stories of courage and show potential to become great leaders in whatever field or career they choose. These trainings will teach them additional leadership and public speaking skills, cultural histories and the nuts and bolts of international business and travel."
Upon returning to the United States, the 10 American students will be required to give three presentations to their peers on what they learned and how the experience benefited them. The Foundation hopes to cultivate an enhanced global perspective and understanding among youth through the peer-to-peer presentations.
