Ten Years Later, How Jim Peniston Helped Transform Pro Bono Financial Planning
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- September 28, 2013 marks the ten-year anniversary of Jim Peniston as CEO of the Foundation for Financial Planning. In those ten years, Jim has helped the organization grow to be a nationally-recognized institution that provides millions of dollars in grants and pro bono financial planning services to the people and communities who need it most.
The Foundation has a track record of success that illustrates that Financial Planning Matters. It matters because financial planning is a critical part of life management, and unfortunately those who need it most often don't have access to it. When the financial planning community and city governments got together to do something about this, Jim, representing the Foundation, helped start the ground-breaking national program known as Financial Planning Days. The mission of this initiative is to bring free, ethical financial planning advice to the general public through one-on-one advising sessions and group workshops provided by highly qualified CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals and experts from the Financial Planning Association who volunteer their time to offer "no-strings-attached" advice. Financial Planning Days are held in cities across the U.S. in October of each year.
Under Jim's management, the Foundation has developed ongoing relationships with many organizations including the Department of Justice, NAACP, and Boys & Girls Clubs of America. In the ten years of Jim's leadership, the Foundation's endowment has grown to over $17 million. He has overseen $5,000,000 of grants awarded in pursuit of the Foundation's mission to help people gain control of their financial lives. Those grants have been awarded to support the underserved, which includes military members, veterans, victims of disasters, low- to moderate-income families, and many others.
One of the areas Jim is most passionate about is working with troops and veterans. Under Jim's guidance, the Foundation created Accomplishing Your Financial Mission, a financial management brochure geared specifically towards members of the military. The brochure is being widely distributed through USA Cares, and Easter Seals Military and Veterans Initiative, both current grantees of the Foundation.
Jim was part of the leadership team that developed the Pro Bono Awards. The awards honor those who have generously volunteered their time and talents to further pro bono financial planning and are a source of inspiration for the rest of the planning community. Jim Peniston has been instrumental in helping pro bono financial planning enrich the lives of everyone touched by it … the recipients, the pro bono planners, the donors and society at large.
