Through SIFE, students around the country are discovering that "doing well" and "doing good" can be accomplished simultaneously throughout college and career. More than 700 business leaders from companies such as BIC, Campbell Soup Company, Cargill, KPMG, Malt-O-Meal, Sara Lee, The Schwan Food Company, Unilever and Walmart/Sam's Club assembled at the Minneapolis Convention Center May 10-12 to evaluate the students' outreach projects, judging how successfully they used business tools to improve the quality of life and standard of living for others.
Among the 15 award-winning outreach projects conducted by the 150-member Texas State University–San Marcos SIFE team was the Migrant Farmer Project that helped more than 300 migrant workers secure jobs. The goal was to meet farmers' and ranchers' demands for labor while providing migrant workers with a job, a temporary place to stay, transportation and basic living necessities. The students developed a business plan to find housing and transportation and raised $40,000 to make facility improvements. Working with four government agencies, they obtained permits and approvals, including H-2A visas, and arranged for a fleet of buses to transport workers.
