His visit will coincide with "Celebration of STEM Education Week in Texas (CSEWT)," an initiative in its inaugural year and formally recognized by Governor Rick Perry. With all the references to the importance of STEM education and industry in his recent addresses, the president's visit to Texas during this historical week makes the CSEWT project all the more meaningful.
Governor Perry granted a proclamation recognizing May 6 - 12, 2013 as the first ever "Celebration of STEM Education Week in Texas (CSEWT)." STEM-related companies, organizations and institutions of higher education have united to work on this project, including Texas A&M University, University of Houston, Chevron, Shell Oil, Weiss Energy Hall, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Consumer Energy Alliance, Region IV and XX, Harmony Public Schools, Educate Texas, Work Force Solutions, Texas Tribune, KRIV-TV Fox 26 and EMAS among others.
STEM students, teachers and professionals all across Texas have begun celebrating STEM with various events at their schools and businesses. Additionally, the featured event during "Celebration of STEM Education Week in Texas", is STEM Education Day, slated for Friday, May 10th at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. This informative event will include engaging panel discussions regarding workforce needs and strong STEM education, as well as a luncheon, exciting exhibits and booths. Pre-recorded video messages from Governor Perry, State Education Commissioner Michael Williams and Houston Mayor Annise Parker will be shown while U.S. Representatives Marc Veasey and Sheila Jackson Lee will be on hand to deliver remarks.
