The report covers total market (on- and off-premise) and includes valuable insight and analysis on beer market trends, brands, brewers, packaging, distribution channels, market valuation and pricing.
What is the current market landscape and what is changing?
In 2012 Thailand's economy continued to expand due to the low unemployment rate, decrease in inflation, the recovery from the flood disaster, and government spending. Beer experienced solid growth due to the favorable macroeconomic factors and the excise hike on local white and brown spirits.
What are the key drivers behind recent market changes?
The government's policy to support the recovery from the floods, as well as increasing the salary of government officers, played an important role in stimulating the economy. Thailand's economy also continued to expand mainly due to domestic spending and increases in consumer confidence, which predominantly resulted from the rise of minimum wages.

Key Market Issues
In 2012, the government announced an excise rise on spirits, brandy, and whisky. The government did not however, make any adjustments for beer.
Men continued to remain the key consumers for beer in 2012, whilst women opted to drink other alcoholic beverages such as flavored alcoholic beverages (FABs) or wine coolers.
In Thailand, the beer market consists of three segments: mainstream, premium, and super premium. There is no Private Label presence in the market.
In the first half of 2012, the domestic economy experienced recovery from the flood disaster which resulted in improved manufacturing, consumption, and investments.
Growth will be lower in 2013, with the rise in food prices being the major factor, meaning that Thai consumers will have lower purchasing power.
Key Highlights
Beer consumption in the on-premise channels saw solid growth, mainly resulting from the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship during the middle of 2012.
In 2012, beer experienced solid growth due to the favorable macroeconomic factors such as the low unemployment rate and the decreased inflation rate.
The excise hike on local white and brown spirits was the important factor that drove beer during the review period, with many low-income consumers switching back to drink mainstream beer due to the narrowed price gap.
The ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA) was the major factor which drove both import and export beers in 2012 because the agreement eliminated tariffs on beer imported from ASEAN countries to Thailand as well as beer exported from Thailand to ASEAN nations.
National beers, rather than local or international options, seem to have driven the overall growth in 2012 as these are the brands which middle income consumers, who received pay increases, are more familiar with.
