The 5th TD-LTE Technology and Spectrum Workshop was successfully held on October 12th in Budapest, Hungary
BUDAPEST, Hungary, Oct. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- On October 12th, International Telecommunications Union (ITU), China Mobile, Global TD-LTE Initiative (GTI) and Telecommunication Development Industry Alliance (TDIA) jointly hosted the 5th TD-LTE Technology and Spectrum Workshop during ITU Telecom World 2015 aiming to facilitate the identification of a world-unified program for spectrum planning and sharing scale effect. This Workshop was attended by Mr. Zhao Houlin, Secretary General of ITU, Vice Chairman of CEPT ECC, top executives of GSMA, GTI and TDIA, Mr. Mo Wei, Member of CPC Leadership Group and Director General of General Office of MIIT, China, Mr. Li Zhengmao, EVP of China Mobile, CTO of KT as well as high management from regulators and operators all over the world.
This event covered the 4G TD-LTE development across different parts of the world, looked into the future 5G development of mobile broadband technology, and touched upon the spectrum shortage caused by fast-developing mobile broadband. ITU estimates that by 2020, the world spectrum demand will be 1340-1960MHz, 5 times higher than that of 2010. Therefore, to gain more spectrum resources and to use efficiently become the key to the future. Against such a backdrop, the advantages and value of TDD have struck out, including its asymmetric spectrum, flexible uplink and downlink time slot allocation, and ultra-high data rate through more efficient use of continuous large block spectrum. Apart from the widely applied TDD spectrum on the 2.3GHz/2.6GHz band, delegates focused their discussion on global planning and application of the golden 3.5GHz band and agreed that the utilization of TDD with continuous broad bandwidth would be more efficient for such band. Many countries including Canada, UK and Japan have issued their license for 3.5GHz, which has become very popular globally for TD-LTE deployment.
The participants suggested that in future spectrum planning, it is better for regulators worldwide firstly make even more efficient use of spectrum already allocated to mobile broadband, in particular, to leverage TD-LTE for TDD spectrum efficiency and harmonize global allocation; secondly, in the coming WRC-15, industry should strive for more frequency resources, especially the c-band which TDD is better positioned for, to satisfy the demand created by explosive traffic growth and 5G development.
