The student population of The Art Institute of Houston has grown by roughly 50 percent in the last five years to approximately 2,300 students. The college looked for a space that could handle a growing student body, as well as the technology needs that are specific to its course offerings. The Southwest Freeway site, built in 2008, meets the college's requirements and is centrally located.
"We made this move because we wanted to ensure that our students continue to receive a high quality education," said Larry Horn, President of The Art Institute of Houston. "This facility not only accommodates our growth but also meets the specific requirements of our degree programs."
In addition to the classroom space, the new facility contains 11 computer labs with more than 300 workstations. The college also constructed a new audio studio, video production studio and library with more than 24,800 separately cataloged items, 2,850 multimedia titles and access to five electronic databases. The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Houston has five kitchens. Courses, the culinary school's restaurant, will be open to the public late July.
The college was established in 1965 as the Houston School of Commercial Art and joined The Art Institutes system of schools in 1978.
