NUEVA YORK, 5 de Octubre de 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Hoy, en el Día Mundial de los Animales, The Body Shop y Cruelty Free International han presentado 8,3 millones de firmas contra ensayos cosméticos en animales ante la sede de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) en Nueva York con el fin de crear un marco global que acabe con las pruebas de la industria cosmética en animales y así avanzar la agenda de desarrollo sostenible de las Naciones Unidas.

La celebración de estas firmas es la culminación de más de 30 años de defensa entre The Body Shop –la primera marca de belleza internacional en hacer campaña contra las pruebas de la industria cosmética en animales– y su socio de campaña de muchos años Cruelty Free International –la primera organización mundial sin fines de lucro dedicada a poner fin a las pruebas de productos cosméticos e ingredientes en animales. El esfuerzo conjunto es la campaña más ambiciosa jamás realizada contra las pruebas cosméticas en animales y sirve como modelo para inspirar la acción de empresas, gobiernos y ciudadanos en el progreso hacia el Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible 12 (SDG12): Consumo y producción responsables.

Las firmas de la petición, que fueron recogidas en tan sólo 15 meses y otorgadas por simpatizantes de todo el mundo, piden a los países de la ONU que formalicen un marco internacional para poner fin a las pruebas cosméticas con animales, en todas partes y para siempre.

Las pruebas cosméticas con animales son crueles, anticuadas, caras e ineficientes. A día de hoy existen alternativas más fiables. The Body Shop y muchas otras compañías libres de crueldad utilizan ingredientes innovadores, eficaces y no crueles en todos sus productos, todos ellos probados con métodos no animales.

Aunque ha habido un progreso considerable, el 80 por ciento de los países aún no han declarado ilegal probar cosméticos en animales. Cruelty Free International estima que más de 500 000 animales son utilizados cada año en ensayos cosméticos.

Un marco global es la única forma de eliminar el sufrimiento animal y crear un campo de juego nivelado en todo el mundo.

La armonización de los requisitos de pruebas de seguridad a nivel mundial permitiría a las empresas evitar una burocracia innecesaria y duplicar las pruebas para acceder a los mercados internacionales. Un marco global no solo daría confianza a las compañías de que están produciendo cosméticos seguros y efectivos a la vez que satisfacen la demanda de los consumidores de productos verdaderamente libres de crueldad, sino que además, el marco global se alinearía con la visión de la ONU de un mundo en el cual, «la humanidad vive en armonía con la naturaleza, en la cual la vida silvestre y otras especies están protegidas».

«En solo 15 meses, más de 8 millones de personas firmaron en reconocimiento de que las pruebas cosméticas con animales no están actualizadas y son innecesarias», declaró David Boynton, director general de The Body Shop. «Estamos decididos a terminar lo que Anita Roddick comenzó en 1989. Hoy estamos en las Naciones Unidas para pedir la colaboración de la industria cosmética, la sociedad civil y los gobiernos para poner fin de manera definitiva a las pruebas con animales en todas partes».
