The Carlos Slim Foundation Presents Acceso Latino, an Online Web Portal to Support the U.S. Latino Population, as Part of Mexican President Pena Nieto's Visit to Los Angeles
Offering education, job training, and information about health and culture in Spanish, Acceso Latino supports the largest ethnic minority in the United States, currently numbering over 40 million people.
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- During Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto's recent visit to Los Angeles, the Carlos Slim Foundation presented Acceso Latino, a new web portal to support Latinos living in the United States, to members of Los Angeles' Mexican community. Acceso Latino is part of a new collaborative effort between the civil and public sectors. This free website provides useful tools and easy access to information in areas like education, health, job training, culture, and more.

President Pena Nieto was accompanied by California Governor Jerry Brown, and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti at the event. Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Jose Antonio Meade, and governors of the Mexican states of Baja California, Chihuahua, Durango, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Michoacan, Nayarit, Oaxaca, Puebla and Zacatecas also attended.
Speaking on behalf of the Carlos Slim Foundation, Mr. Carlos Slim Domit explained, "Acceso Latino was created to facilitate and encourage the development of skills that Latinos need to obtain better opportunities and a better quality of life for themselves and their families."
Acceso Latino has already been well received among the Hispanic community. In the first 15 days since its initial launch on August 11th, the site has attracted more than 23,000 visits from states across the U.S., with its highest numbers coming from California, Texas, and New York.
As a brief video shown at the event explained, the topics covered by Acceso Latino include:
- Free online job training, which provides support for finding new or better employment, as well as entrepreneurial guidance for starting a business. (There are no time limits, age limits, or other prerequisites to enroll in courses.)
- Educational information for all academic levels, in order to begin or complete studies; important tools that aid in the preparation of exams such as the GED, the Hi-SET and the TASC; as well as the best resources to learn English.
- Basic information concerning financial literacy and immigrants' rights, as well as valuable health information for individuals and their families.
