The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill Passes in the Senate
WASHINGTON, June 28, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) is very pleased with yesterday's passage of the Senate immigration bill. The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (also referred to as the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill or CIR) is a common sense reform, necessary to improve the broken immigration system in our country. With a vote of 68-32, the Senate approved its amended version of the bill which will be sent to the House of Representatives to be debated on. NHCSL supports the bi-partisan cooperation that has helped this bill overcome its first hurdle in the process of becoming a law.
President of NHCSL, Representative Minnie Gonzalez (CT) responded to the Senate vote stating that, "No bill is perfect, yet our country is taking a step in the right direction." She continued, "We encourage the House to prioritize the passage of this bill before the end of summer. It is our intention to work closely with member legislators in order to win this uphill battle."
"Successful implementation of CIR depends on the House of Representatives realizing that the economic future of this country is tied to our labor needs," expressed Representative Catherine Miranda (AZ) Chair of NHCSL International Relations, Trade & Immigration Task Force. "Immigrants share our values and drive to be entrepreneurs; with global competition we need to embrace the infusion of new and fresh ideas that immigrants offer."
Immigration is not only a key part of our history, it is also an imperative factor in the economic recovery of the United States. NHCSL hopes that Congress continues to share this view and work together in order to pass a piece of legislation that will reform our current immigration system and bring the 11 million undocumented out of the shadows.
The NHCSL is the premier national association of Hispanic state legislators working to design and implement policies and procedures that will improve the quality of life for Hispanics throughout the country. NHCSL was founded in 1989 as a nonpartisan, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with the mission to be the most effective voice for the more than 340 Hispanic legislators.
