The Dannon Company Awards Texas AgriLIFE Extension Service the Sixth Annual Dannon Next Generation Nutrition® Grant

FORT WORTH, Texas, Aug. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dannon Company, Inc. today awarded the sixth annual Dannon Next Generation Nutrition® Grant to Texas AgriLIFE Extension Service, supporting the implementation of its Balancing Food and Play physical activity and nutrition education curriculum into Tarrant County Schools. Dannon presented the organization with a $30,000 check during an afternoon event that also featured a healthy-cooking demonstration by Connie Swearingen, executive chef to Texas Governor Rick Perry.

Since 1915, Texas AgriLIFE Extension Service has provided quality education designed to improve people's lives, with health and nutrition issues as a top priority. One of its signature programs, Balancing Food and Play, was developed in 2006 by a team of health specialist faculty at Texas A&M University, Texas AgriLIFE Extension Service educators, and third-grade teachers to promote healthy nutrition and daily physical activity for school children and their families.

Balancing Food and Play will address an alarming recent trend in children's health. Rates of obesity among children and adolescents have reached epidemic proportions in Texas as well as across the nation. According to a report released by the Texas comptroller, 20.7 percent of Texans ages 10 to 17 were obese, compared with 16.4 percent nationwide. Additionally, a 2007 survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that 54.8 percent of Texas students did not meet the recommended levels of daily physical activity.

To counter this, the program will promote several key lifestyle changes including increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, increasing water consumption over other choices, at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity, and limiting screen time to less than two hours per day.

Dannon established the Dannon Next Generation Nutrition® Grant in 2006 to promote childhood nutrition education in each of the four communities where a Dannon facility is located. As part of the program, Dannon contributes $30,000 to four non-profit organizations ($120,000 in total) in Auglaize, Mercer, Darke, or Shelby County, Ohio; Salt Lake County, Utah; Tarrant County, Texas; and Westchester County, New York, for programs that nurture healthy eating habits among children. Over the last five years, programs funded through the Dannon Next Generation Nutrition® Grant have reached more than 1,860 children in Tarrant County.

Today's grant ceremony, held at the Texas AgriLIFE Extension Service Tarrant County office, was attended by Fort Worth Councilman Daniel Scarth and Tarrant County Director of Public Health Lou Brewer, as well as Barbara Ragland, district director for U.S. Congresswoman Kay Granger; J. Collin McLochlin, deputy regional director for U.S. Senator John Cornyn; and Patricia Bostic, development director for U.S. Congressman Michael Burgess.
