The Dare-to-Dream Medtech Design Challenge is Open for Entries
Entrants have the chance to win cash prizes by designing their dream medical device
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Oct. 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry (MD+DI) magazine announced today that its 2016 Dare-to-Dream Medtech Design Challenge is now accepting entries. Interested participants simply need to dream up an innovative medical device design to enter.
The fourth-annual Dare-to-Dream Medtech Design Challenge, sponsored by MD+DI, evaluates entries on creativity and design, market viability, and potential impact on healthcare. The challenge provides would-be designers with an opportunity to dream big without the barriers of funding, regulation, or reimbursement.
"MD+DI created the Dare-to-Dream Medtech Design Challenge as an experiment to see what might be possible if medtech professionals were free to innovate without real-world challenges," said Jamie Hartford, Editor-in-Chief, MD+DI and Director of Content, Medical Brands, UBM Advanced Manufacturing Group. "The competition is a chance for entrants to think outside the box and have a little fun. On a deeper level, it highlights some of the healthcare problems that could potentially be solved if innovators were allowed the space to create without parameters."
Deadline for entries is October 14, 2016. Submissions will be narrowed to 10 finalists before a judging panel selects competition winners. The grand-prize winner will receive $500 and the design will also be profiled in MD+DI. First and second runners-up will win $250 and $100, respectively.* Winners will be announced online in early November.
Past winners include the BlinkBit, a biosensor plug placed in a patient's eyelid tear duct to continuously measure glucose; the Custom Smart Wearable Device, a targeted resistance garment intended to build muscle strength and increase bone density; and the mHolter, a system that includes skin electrodes and a smartphone app to monitor heart activity 24 hours a day.
This year's judges include the following medtech veterans and visionaries:
- Bill Evans
Evans is founder and president of product design firm Bridge Design in San Francisco, which for more than 20 years has helped design products for the medical and life science industries. Evans is also a member of MD+DI's editorial advisory board. - Dr. Stephanie Kreml
