Many of the city's philanthropic leaders and long-time advocates for the arts were in attendance to honor those civic leaders who led the effort to save the historic theatre more than 30 years ago: Mr. Jeff Dunn, Chairman of the Arts Assembly Board; Mr. E. William Nash, CEO of Prudential and Chair of the Florida Theatre Fundraising Campaign; Ms. Trinita Logue, President of the Arts Assembly; and The Honorable Jake Godbold, Mayor of Jacksonville from 1978 to 1987.
The $4.1 million restoration of the historic 1,900-seat facility began in January of 1983 and continued until October, making it the most ambitious and successful arts project ever undertaken in Jacksonville at the time. The entire Jacksonville community—businesses, government, foundations, civic organizations, and private individuals—generously supported the restoration efforts. Their enduring support has allowed the non-profit Florida Theatre to thrive, ensuring that the non-profit Florida Theatre will continue to play a leading role in the growth and development of Jacksonville's cultural arts community for many years to come.
