The Hajdari Group's Martin Lucaj Spearheads Change In New York City's Speed Limit Legislation
NEW YORK, June 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Martin Lucaj of The Hajdari Group, has been recognized by Senator Jeff Klein for his efforts to help change the New York City speed limit legislation.
This legislation is in line with Mayor Bill de Blasio's Vision Zero plan and will allow New York City's Department of Transportation to reduce the current 30 mile per hour speed limit to 25 on roadways where no signs are posted. It will also allow local community boards to push for a further reduction in speed, in excess of 5 miles per hour, where necessary in their respective jurisdictions.
Late last year, Maria Lucaj, mother of Martin Lucaj, tragically died as she was struck by a vehicle while crossing the intersection of Neill and Williamsbridge Avenues in the Morris Park section of the Bronx, NY. Since the tragedy, Martin Lucaj, 25, along with his brothers Robert Lucaj, 34 and John Lucaj, 32 have made countless efforts to make changes to the speed limit legislation and improve pedestrian safety. Martin Lucaj and his brothers were thrilled to see that the culmination of their efforts paid off and praised Senator Klein for ushering this legislation through the State Senate.
"New York City has always been home to densely packed roads and streets, but the importance of traffic safety truly hit home for me when my mother, Maria Lucaj, was the victim of a car going too fast to break in time. The fact of the matter is if the car had been going slower, my mother would still be with us today. By lowering the speed limit by 5 miles per hour – or more – I know that lives will be saved. My brothers and I are fully committed to ensuring that our mother's death was not in vain by doing everything in our power to see to it that no one else suffers a similar tragedy by strongly supporting new laws for traffic safety. On behalf of my brothers, Robert and John, I'd like to thank Senator Klein for making traffic safety a priority and for taking action to protect pedestrians," said Martin Lucaj.
Zaim Hajdari, President of The Hajdari Group, took to Facebook Friday evening to applaud Martin Lucaj for his successful accomplishment in driving this legislation through the Assembly and Senate offices. "It will be impossible to quantify the lives that the new law, you helped pass, will save but I know it will outlive us all. I am proud to have you as a friend and associate," said Hajdari.
The legislation now heads to Governor Andrew Cuomo who is expected to sign it into law.
