The New Riverwalk Water Trolley Allows Visitors, Tourists and Residents To Cross The New River 7-Days A Week For Free

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Oct. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Crossing the New River to and from the north and south banks will now be as easy as crossing the street. . . and it will be free.

The Downtown Fort Lauderdale Transportation Management Association (DFLTMA), in partnership with the City of Fort Lauderdale and Riverwalk Fort Lauderdale, will begin operating the Riverwalk Water Trolley on October 18, 2014. The DFLTMA already administers service for the Sun Trolley, which provides community bus transportation to approximately 40,000 passengers per month on its seven routes in and around Fort Lauderdale.

The one-year Riverwalk Water Trolley pilot program, funded through a $150,000 grant from the City of Fort Lauderdale and approved by the Fort Lauderdale City Commission on October 7, 2014, offers residents, working professionals and tourists free connectivity across the New River. The four designated stops on the north side of the river are: Esplanade Park, Riverfront Plaza, Huizenga Plaza and Riverwalk Laura Ward Park. The four designated stops on the south side of the river are: Smoker Park, Downtowner Saloon, New River Yacht Club and Tarpon River.

"The New River is essentially the first highway in the City of Fort Lauderdale," said Robyn Chiarelli, Executive Director of DFLTMA. "Our goal is to make it as easy to cross the New River as it is to cross any street. We are building on the city's many multimodal options to provide connectivity for our customers."

The Riverwalk Water Trolley, with seating for 48 passengers, will be wheelchair accessible, offer bike stows, and operate on an environmentally friendly diesel electric engine. Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 11 p.m. daily.

"The Riverwalk Water Trolley truly takes advantage of Fort Lauderdale's natural infrastructure making it easier for patrons to get to and from the restaurants, bars, parks, museums and entertainment venues that Fort Lauderdale has to offer," said Chiarelli.

Passengers can board or disembark the Riverwalk Water Trolley at any of the eight designated stops along the route. The Water Trolley is estimated to stop at each location every 20 to 30 minutes and will maintain a zigzag route making it possible to cross the river in less than five minutes.
