While no major event impacted the Airline industry over the past 5 trading days, airline stocks tend to deliver mixed performances with most of them reflecting a bearish momentum. However, news that caught the eye in the past one week were JetBlue Airways Corporation's (Nasdaq:JBLU-Free Report) service expansion; United Continental Holdings Inc.'s (NYSE:UAL-Free Report) new service offering and American Airlines Group Inc.'s (Nasdaq:AAL-Free Report) fallout with Orbitz Worldwide Inc. (NYSE:OWW-Free Report).
A Recap of Last Week's Most Important Stories
1. Passengers availing JetBlue Airways' services will now have access to more flying options with the carrier's latest decision to fly south to Jacksonville – a city with the highest population in the state of Florida. The New York-based carrier plans to add two daily non-stop flights to Jacksonville International airport (JAX) from Reagan National Airport (DCA) on and from Dec 18, 2014. The launch will coincide with the carrier's two new daily flights from DCA to Fort Myers (RSW) and West Palm Beach (PBI) in Florida (read more: JetBlue Expands Washington DC Service with Florida Flights).
2. United Continental Holdings Inc. has launched intriguing food and beverage options for its domestic premium customers. The latest offering will include four new salad choices, replacing the previous chicken and shrimp salad options (read more: United Airlines to Better Dining Options for Domestic Fliers).
3. Premier passenger carrier American Airlines severed its ties with online travel company Orbitz Worldwide Inc. This resulted from the two companies failing to reach an agreement on their long-term dispute over fees..American Airlines notified that no settlement could be made over the fees that Orbitz charged customers buying American Airlines tickets buying from the latter's websites. As a result the nation's largest carrier has already withdrawn its fares from Orbitz and two of its affiliate websites – Cheaptickets.com and ebookers.com. Beginning Sep 1, the carrier will also drop U.S. Airways listings from Orbitz.
4. Alaska Air Group, Inc. (NYSE:ALK-Free Report) announced its Fall Award Sale of the year. Mileage Plan members of the company can now boost their frequent flier miles starting Aug 26 through Oct 31. Members can travel for as low as 5,000 miles one-way, which represents 60% discount on a standard award-level ticket.
