Anthony Yom, math teacher at Abraham Lincoln High School in Los Angeles, California, has been selected as the winner of the Escalante–Gradillas Prize for Best in Education for 2016. The winner and runners-up for the prize, chosen from ten finalists, were announced Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2016, at TheBestSchools.org website.
Anthony Yom wins a $10,000 cash prize for himself, and another $10,000 for his school.
The second-place honoree is Jose Octavio Rivas Jr. of Lennox Math, Science & Technology Academy in Lennox, California, whose school will receive $5,000 in recognition of Rivas' excellence. The third-place honoree is Michael Kosko of Al Raby School for Community and Environment in Chicago, which will receive $3,000 to celebrate Kosko's accomplishments.
"These three outstanding teachers exemplify the spirit and academic rigor of Jaime Escalante and Henry Gradillas," says Dan Edelen, director of marketing services for TheBestSchools.org. "By doing more with less and inspiring students to greater heights of academic performance, Yom, Rivas, and Kosko truly are teaching heroes, and we're proud to reward their achievements."
Math teacher Jaime Escalante, profiled in the film Stand & Deliver, and his principal, Henry Gradillas, who now serves on the prize panel, helped underprivileged students in a trying academic environment pass the stringent AP Calculus test. The Escalante–Gradillas Prize for Best in Education seeks to honor hardworking teachers who challenge students to exceed expectations and who inspire them toward better futures.
