DETROIT, May 6, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Join us for one of the most inspirational events that raises critical resources to help save lives. The 24th Annual Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure®, locally presented by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, will be Saturday, May 16, at Chene Park on Detroit's riverfront. This year's Race continues the 24-year tradition, celebrating survivors and honoring loved ones with the same mission of ending breast cancer. The 5K walk will start and finish on East Jefferson. The 5K competitive run has a new route this year which will start down East Jefferson and then take runners along the Detroit Riverwalk.
Since the first Detroit Race in 1992, more than $27 million has been raised and invested in the fight against breast cancer supporting screening, treatment support and education for underserved communities, as well as fund breast cancer research in Michigan and around the world.
"The Komen Detroit Race has literally changed my life," said Katrina Studvent, chair of the Komen Detroit Race and director of Breast Cancer Special Programs at Karmanos Cancer Institute. "I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 30. This disease didn't run in my family. I was unsure what my future would be. The following year, I stood on the stage during a Race ceremony and held a sign that stated '1-Year Survivor.' That was eight years ago and now I feel privileged to be leading this movement in metro Detroit.
"I've seen first-hand the impact the Race has on people's lives; those battling breast cancer and others who have stood by their loved ones side supporting them through their journey," added Studvent. "The dollars raised from the Komen Detroit Race assures that those in need of breast cancer services in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties have access to those services. Thanks to the incredible support of our wonderful sponsors, volunteers and participants, we will move closer to our goal of ending breast cancer forever. We invite everyone to register for the May 16 Race."

Many metro Detroit businesses will be offering incentives to Race registrants wearing a 2015 Race t-shirt.
Brian Christy, co-chair of the Komen Detroit Race, also encourages others, especially men, to help support this cause.
"Although I'm new to my position with the Komen Detroit Race, just starting a few months ago, I am not new to this disease," said Christy. "My mom, who had ovarian cancer followed by breast cancer, lost her battle a little over a year ago. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of her.
"I wanted to do something that would make a difference and I'm grateful for the opportunity to be part of something that is truly changing lives for the better."
THE IMPACT OF RACE PARTICIPATION
For more than three decades, Susan G. Komen has been seeking cures and helping low-income, uninsured and under-served people access life-saving breast cancer screening, education and treatment support. Komen's mission has never changed. In metro Detroit, since 1992, the Komen Detroit Race has raised and invested more than $27 million to help end breast cancer. Each year, the Race awards 75 percent of the net proceeds to breast cancer screening, treatment support and education programs for medically underserved people in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. The remaining 25 percent funds breast cancer research grants awarded through Susan G. Komen.
Thanks to last year's generous crowd of 30,000, including 1,200 volunteers and 100 sponsors and underwriters, the 2014 Komen Detroit Race for the Cure® awarded nearly $900,000 to local needs-based community programs and contributed $235,000 to Komen's Award and Research Grant Program, benefitting scientists around the world and here at home.
The Karmanos Cancer Institute has served as the local presenting sponsor of the Komen Detroit Race for the Cure® since its inception in 1992.
