Thousands of Adecco employees stage worldwide "Street Day" aimed at combating the global youth unemployment crisis
Adecco leads the fight in Canadian cities from coast-to-coast
TORONTO, April 23, 2013 /CNW/ - With young people feeling the worst effects of a tough labour market, Adecco employees in Canada and in over 60 countries will take to the streets on Tuesday, April 30th - dubbed worldwide as "Street Day" - to reach out, lend their expertise, and help improve youth employability through guidance and free training workshops. Every Adecco branch in over 60 countries, including more than 50 branches from coast-to-coast in Canada, will hold special events to engage with youth and provide them with the knowledge, counseling, and inspiration they need to succeed in the world of work. Street Day is just the start of an overall initiative called "Adecco Way to Work".
Adecco, one of the world's leading providers of HR and staffing solutions, is launching this international initiative to combat the global youth unemployment crisis. Street Day, inspired by Adecco's "Redvolucion" campaign in Spain - where the unemployment rate among youth has reached 55 per cent - will see every Adecco branch in Canada hold an open house targeted specifically at youth. Adecco staff will also hit the streets in their respective cities, including Toronto, where the largest Canadian Street Day event will be taking place at Yonge & Dundas Square from 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. This event, along with national open house activity, will feature skill testing exercises, free educational seminars, and career counseling to any and all young people looking to improve their employability and secure their next job.
"While Canada's youth unemployment rate is not as dire as it is in Spain and Greece, it's still something Canadians need to be aware of," said Shari Angle, Vice President of Talent and Communications for Adecco Employment Services Limited. "Although the rate has come down a bit since the Global Financial Crisis, we are still hovering at record numbers - nearly the highest we've seen in over 20 years. Prolonged youth unemployment at these levels can have serious consequences for both the economy and our society."
Youth unemployment in Canada peaked at 15.2 per cent after the Global Financial Crisis. It now hovers around 14 per cent, which is about double the general unemployment rate.
Angle also stresses that Adecco Way to Work is about more than just Street Day. In Canada and around the world, the initiative will continue, taking on various incarnations. "Adecco believes that access to employment is a fundamental human right," said Angle. "Work gives us a sense of purpose and belonging - two things that young people need the most in order to realize their full potential."
