Thousands Petition White House to Designate Russia as State Sponsor of Terrorism
"We the People" signatures roll in to establish truth and consequences for Russia as deadline to reach100k goal looms
WASHINGTON, May 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- An online petition calling on White House to designate Russia as a "State Sponsor of Terrorism" has received more than 60,000 signatures since being launched in late April by a Russian-born American businessman living in the USA since 1992. The petition is currently one of the most popular on "We the People" page of the official website of the White House. The appeal needs 40,000 more signatures within the next week to elicit an official response from the Obama administration.

"This petition calls for the White House to establish and review the facts regarding Russia's aggression against neighboring countries and to hold Russia accountable for its actions," said Alex Konanykhin, who was granted political asylum in the USA twice, in 1997 and 2007. "Putin's undeclared war against the Ukraine is a deep embarrassment to me and many others with Russian heritage. The first step in dealing with the problem is calling it by its proper name, so I felt compelled to initiate this petition."
Designation as a "state sponsor of terrorism" would immediately prompt additional and stiffer sanctions against Russia than those being imposed so far. If so designated, Russia would join four other countries currently recognized by US as sponsoring terrorists including Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria.
