Three-in-Four U.S. Adults Don't Plan to Get a New Gym Membership or Renew an Existing One This Year, Reveals New CouponCabin.com Survey
--Nearly One-in-Ten Have Signed Up for a Gym Membership and Quit Within a Year--
WHITING, Ind., Jan. 11, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Losing weight and getting in shape are typically top New Year's resolutions for many, but following through on those goals can be a challenge. According to a new CouponCabin.com survey, nearly three-in-four (74 percent) U.S. adults report they won't be getting a new gym membership or renewing an existing one this year. This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from December 15th-19th, 2011 among 2,646 U.S. adults aged 18 and older.
In addition, 7 percent of U.S. adults said they have signed up for a gym membership as a New Year's resolution and quit before the year was over. Seventy percent of those who quit within a year quit within five months, with 9 percent saying they quit in January and 15 percent quitting in February.
While hitting the gym and shedding the pounds can be a challenge for many, 20 percent of U.S. adults said they would get a new gym membership or renew an existing one this year. Of those who currently have a gym membership, their frequency at the gym varies:
- Go to the gym once a week or more – 53 percent
- Go once a day or more – 15 percent
- Go less than once a month – 10 percent
- Men are significantly more likely to go to the gym than women, at 79 percent and 67 percent, respectively.
Gym memberships often have a stigma of being costly, but gym goers report they are able to find many affordable options. In fact, 85 percent of U.S. adults who have gym memberships report they pay $50 or less per month for their facilities. Some memberships are more costly, though, as 15 percent said they pay more than $50 per month, adding up to more than $600 a year.
"Many people aiming to lose weight and be healthier head to the gym to do so, but it's not the only method," said Jackie Warrick, President and Chief Savings Officer at CouponCabin.com. "If cost is of a concern, there are countless cost-effective ways to work out. Consider the many options around you, such as shoveling snow, utilizing free on-demand fitness programs offered by your cable provider and just going for a brisk walk. The options are endless and sometimes starting small is the best way to achieve your goals."
Sometimes, the goal to lose weight supersedes budget practicality. Of U.S. adults interesting in losing weight, one-quarter (25 percent) said they would be willing to spend money on a personal trainer to help them lose weight. Women (28 percent) are more likely to indicate this than men (22 percent).
