Thrivent Financial Commits up to $275,000 for Tornado Disaster Relief
Organization seeks to encourage member donations, fundraising through supplemental funding
MINNEAPOLIS, May 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has committed up to $275,000 for disaster relief in response to tornadoes that ripped through Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee on April 27. The funding includes up to $250,000 designed to supplement funding through Thrivent Financial chapter service teams nationwide, and $25,000 in additional "Care in Regions" funding to be used for volunteer activities coordinated by Thrivent Financial staff in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee.
"Thrivent Financial members have always demonstrated their caring nature during times of natural disaster," said Tim Schwan, Thrivent Financial vice president of Church and Community Engagement. "These dollars will supplement and support the generosity of our members as they give and raise funds through their local chapters to support those who are suffering."
For every $2 raised by chapter service teams (individuals from at least six separate Thrivent Financial member families), Thrivent Financial will provide an additional $1, up to a total of $250,000. Through this effort, a total of up to $750,000 ($250,000 from Thrivent Financial and $500,000 from member appeals, collections or fundraising) will be created for disaster recovery.
The funds will be sent to three Lutheran relief organizations: Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR), Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Disaster Response, and LCMS World Relief and Human Care.
The tornado disaster relief efforts will continue through July 1, 2011.
