Tips for Parenting ADHD Kids
The Learning Lab Presents Valuable Seminar
BRENTWOOD, Tenn., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The Learning Lab of Brentwood will present a free seminar, Tips for Parenting ADHD Kids, on Thursday April 22 from 6:00-7:30 PM at the Community Services Building in Franklin. Dr. David Elkins, Clinical Psychologist and Supervising Psychologist of the Assessment Center at The Learning Lab of Brentwood, will lead the seminar.
"Any parent with an ADHD child knows the daily challenges can often seem overwhelming," said Pat Elkins, Director of The Learning Lab of Brentwood. "You can never have enough information or 'tricks up your sleeve' to help manage and cope with your child's constant activity, impulses and special needs.
"Parents, adults, family members, educators and caregivers responsible for an ADHD child can benefit immensely from this seminar," Elkins added.
Dr. David Elkins will discuss the critical "dos and don'ts" of parenting an ADHD child, focusing on how to encourage and reward good behavior, how to communicate and reinforce behavioral goals and expectations, and how to develop effective social skills.
"ADHD kids require lots of direction and parents need to be especially proactive and intentional," stated Dr. Elkins. "But it's important to learn when and when not to respond to certain behaviors and how to do so in a way that ultimately reinforces the child's positive self-image."
Additional topics will include diagnosing ADHD with and without hyperactivity, as well as suggestions for various lifestyle interventions. Dr. Elkins will also offer a "non-physician" perspective on medication issues. He will be available to answer questions during and after the seminar.
Tips for Parenting ADHD Kids is part of a series of free seminars, sponsored by the Williamson County Resource Center, to help educate and support parents of children and young adults with ADHD.
