TISTA Wins Two Maryland Business Awards

ROCKVILLE, Md., May 20, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- TISTA Science and Technology Corporation, a service-disabled, veteran-owned small business IT and engineering company, and its founder and president, Ahmed R. Ali, won awards from two Maryland-based business associations for outstanding commitment to employees and continuing growth and excellence.

The Montgomery County Department of Economic Development named TISTA the 2014 Veteran-Owned Company of the Year at its small business awards luncheon on May 9. The Tech Council of Maryland named Ali Executive of the Year at its 26^th annual Industry Awards Celebration on May 15.

"TISTA's growth has been possible because of our employees," Ali said as he accepted the Tech Council award. "And, as I look into the crowd and see our many partners and the other nominees, I am so proud of all that we have been able to accomplish." 

The Tech Council of Maryland highlighted TISTA's innovative approach to the 17-day government shutdown in October 2013. While many federal government and contractor employees in Maryland had to scramble to put together a paycheck, TISTA employees did not. TISTA executives continued working but took no pay, and instead donated their salaries and vacation days to pay 60 furloughed employees. This solution ensured the security and well-being of employees, many of whom are veterans, as well as cut company losses by 70 percent.

Ali, who also accepted the Montgomery County Department of Economic Development Award, notes that the flexibility they had to help employees during the furlough had a lot to do with their small business status. "As a privately held company, we are not accountable to shareholders or the bottom line.  We are accountable to our employees and for ensuring their continued success."

In accepting the award for Veteran-Owned Company of the Year, Ali, who is a long-time Montgomery County resident, talked about the important support he has received from the County and of his goal and success in hiring and supporting veterans.
