Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:HTZ): On August 26, Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:HTZ) announced that the company has signed a definitive merger agreement with Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Inc. under which Hertz would acquire Dollar Thrifty in exchange of approximately US$2.3 billion. "We'll be a stronger global competitive player with a full range of rental options not only in the U.S. but in Europe and other markets given Dollar Thrifty's strong international presence," said Mark P. Frissora, Hertz Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. What's more, Hertz said it also agreed to sell the Advantage business to Franchise Services of North America and Macquarie Capital. The closing of that divestiture is conditioned upon, among other things, Hertz completing an acquisition of Dollar Thrifty. Share prices of Hertz have traded as high as US$16.64 per share and as low as US$7.80 in the past 52 weeks. By the end of Monday's trading, shares of Hertz trades have gone up 8.06% to US$14.21 with heavy volume traded. Hudson City Bancorp, Inc. (NASDAQ:HCBK): On August 27, Hudson City Bancorp, Inc. (NASDAQ:HCBK) announced the company has signed a definitive agreement with M&T Bank Corporation ("M&T") under which Hudson City will merge into a subsidiary of M&T, expanding the premier community banking franchise in the eastern United States. The transaction is valued at about US$3.7 billion. After the transaction is completed, Ronald E. Hermance, Jr., Hudson City Chairman and CEO, will be named to the Boards of Directors of M&T and its principal banking subsidiary, M&T Bank. Abnormal trading volume of Hudson City was found on August 28 reaching 84.78 million shares, 22 times heavier than usual day trading. Shares of Hudson City gained 15.6% to US$7.45.
