Together For Girls: Taking Action To End Violence Against Children
WASHINGTON, July 25, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Together for Girls hosted an interactive panel discussion and media training at the National Museum of Women in the Arts during the XIX International AIDS Conference on Wednesday, July 25 at 11:30am. This event highlighted the urgent need to end violence against children, particularly sexual violence against girls, and identified ways to contribute, from policy recommendations to how journalists can cover issues of sexual violence for maximum impact. Panelists included New York Times photojournalist Lynsey Addario, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Geeta Rao Gupta, UNAIDS Deputy Executive Director Jan Beagle, Executive Vice President of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) Gary Cohen, and GlobalGirl Media journalist Sthokozo Mabaso. Together for Girls Director Michele Moloney-Kitts moderated the event.
In addition to the main panel discussion, a photo exhibit sponsored by BD featuring works from renowned photojournalists (including Lynsey Addario, Kristen Ashburn and Stephanie Sinclair) was on display at the museum. The exhibit illustrated the unequal world a girl inhabits throughout her life and the opportunities for changing the gender dynamic. Select photos are also on sale for the benefit of Together for Girls through Nuru Project (www.nuruproject.org)
Together for Girls is taking the lead in preventing sexual violence against children, as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton highlighted in her recent remarks on Evidence and Impact: Closing the Data Gender Gap: "In Tanzania, for example, it was found that almost 30 percent of girls and over 10 percent of boys have suffered an unwanted sexual experience. The Government of Tanzania then used this data to develop and implement a national plan to prevent violence against children. Concrete action is possible when we understand the scope and scale of a problem."
Launched in 2009 at the Clinton Global Initiative, Together for Girls is a global public-private partnership dedicated to ending violence against children, particularly sexual violence against girls. The partnership focuses on documenting the magnitude and impact of violence against children through national surveys and data, coordinating evidence-based program actions in countries to address issues identified through the surveys; and global advocacy and public awareness efforts. The partnership brings together the United Nations through UNICEF, UNAIDS, UNFPA, UN Women and WHO; the U.S. Government through the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the U.S. Department of State, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Violence Prevention Division; and the private sector through CDC Foundation, Grupo ABC, the Nduna Foundation and BD.
