"Top Doc" Dr. Michael Cohen Explores 4 Major Myths About Breast Implants

BALTIMORE, March 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- There is no shortage of information about breast implants, but what women read online or hear from their friends is not always accurate, says Dr. Michael Cohen, a Baltimore Magazine "Top Doc" and board certified plastic surgeon and breast augmentation specialist at the Cosmetic Surgery Center of Maryland.

To help patients better understand their options, Dr. Cohen sets the record straight about four prevalent myths about breast implants that patients might encounter as they conduct their own research.

Myth: Breast implants need to be replaced every 10 years

Fact: There is no need to replace breast implants if a patient is not experiencing any problems.
"While not considered lifetime devices, there are many breast augmentation patients who've gone 20 years or more without incident," says Dr. Cohen. "Certain studies have shown that the occurrence of ruptures in saline implants increases after 10 years, and this is likely the root of this misconception."

Myth: Silicone gel is always the best choice

Fact: Aesthetically pleasing, natural looking breast augmentation results can be achieved with both saline and silicone gel implants. "What is most important is choosing the correct implant for an individual patient's needs," says Dr. Cohen. He states that while most of his patients do choose silicone, those who get saline implants are typically very satisfied with their results.

"In general, thinner patients or those with less natural breast tissue to cover an implant will get a better result with silicone, but for the right patient, saline can be an excellent, cost-effective choice," says Dr. Cohen.

Myth: The same size of implant is used for both breasts

Fact: Many women get the most aesthetically pleasing breast augmentation results by having two different sized implants due to asymmetry prior to surgery. Dr. Cohen says that it is actually more common than not for women to have some degree of breast asymmetry. He will often place a larger implant on one side as a way to achieve a more even breast size with augmentation. Breast implants are available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and profiles, making it possible to improve even significant asymmetry.

Myth: Women with breast implants cannot breastfeed

Fact: Many women with implants can breastfeed successfully, and breast implants will not affect the quality or safety of milk produced. Dr. Cohen stresses that the incision location is more likely to impact the ability to breastfeed after surgery. He recommends the inframammary incision located in the crease underneath the breast, which does not affect the structures of the milk ducts and also allows a surgeon to place the implant with optimal precision.
