AAA Reveals Common Insurance Exclusions for Holiday Shoppers
PHOENIX, Dec. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Shoppers seeking the perfect present will be comparing price tags, hitting the sales, and scooping up deals before Santa comes to town. However, AAA Insurance would like to remind consumers to also consider the price they'll pay for their insurance policy in the New Year.
"Many shoppers save all year for those big wish list items, but they may not consider the total cost of that purchase when it comes to their homeowner's policy," said Brad Oltmans, vice president of insurance for AAA Arizona. "Some items or even animals can raise your premium, be excluded from the policy, or cancel coverage altogether."
To help shoppers save some green, and keep their annual budgets out of the red, AAA Insurance has compiled a list of the most common insurance exclusions and policy-raisers gifted this season:
- Trampolines. Insurers view outdoor trampolines as a high risk for personal injury. Therefore, some providers may not offer you liability coverage if you or someone else is hurt using the toy. Otherwise, you may expect to see a higher premium, making that one-time purchase a monthly budget burden.
- Certain breeds of dog. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that about 800,000 dog bite injuries require medical attention each year, with half occurring on the dog owner's property. Therefore, many insurers will exclude pit bulls, Rottweilers, or other "vicious breeds" from a homeowner's policy, leaving owners financially responsible for Fido's behavior.
- Fine jewelry, electronics, art or collectibles. Luxury items are not commonly excluded from homeowners' or renters' policies, but they are only covered up to a certain value. Contact your insurance provider to place high-value items on a "schedule"–or specifically list the item on your insurance policy–or purchase personal property insurance to protect the full value of the item.
