Top Heart-Healthy Habits to Reduce Employers' Healthcare Costs

Feb. 24 webinar from Zipongo-the digital nutrition company-will share tips on improving cardiovascular health on the job and at home

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The cost of treating heart disease in the United States will triple by 2030 to over half a trillion dollars, according to the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The greatest share of those costs will be born by the nation's employers, especially the 82 percent of companies with 500 or more employees that are self-insured. To help lower costs, nutritional experts say a few relatively simple workplace changes can help establish heart-healthy habits that will improve workers' health.

"One of the best places to contain the astronomical cost of heart disease is on the job, where employers have more control over their employees' activities than they do at home," said Jason Lau, MS, RD, CDN, Director of Nutrition and Wellness for Zipongo, a digital nutrition company that helps large employers and health plans keep their employees and members healthy. "Employers can help establish healthy lifestyle habits among their workers with incentives, subsidies and peer pressure."

Zipongo will host a webinar, "Top Heart Healthy Habits to Reduce Healthcare Costs," on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.  Intended for employee benefits managers and health plan executives, the free 30-minute webinar will review workplace health initiatives including:

  • creating healthy cafeteria lunches
  • providing heart-healthy guidelines or policies for personnel who order lunch for meetings
  • incentives for healthy grocery purchases
  • subsidized nutritionist visits

Zipongo is featured in The New York Times today for its work helping some of the nation's largest employers keep their workers healthy through better nutrition.  Read the article here:
