Top Wall Street Analyst Craig Moffett Announces Formation of Moffett Research LLC
NEW YORK, May 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Top-ranked Telecommunications and Cable & Satellite analyst Craig Moffett today announced the formation of Moffett Research, LLC, an independent equity research firm (www.moffettresearch.com). Moffett left Sanford C. Bernstein & Co, LLC in January after more than ten years there.
Craig Moffett, 50, brings to Moffett Research more than twenty five years of experience in telecommunications. During his tenure at Sanford C. Bernstein he became the top ranked analyst in America in both the U.S. Telecommunications and U.S. Cable & Satellite sectors, an unprecedented accomplishment. He was known throughout his eleven years there for his highly detailed and forward- thinking research.
Moffett was named the top U.S. Telecommunications analyst in Bloomberg's 2012 equity research poll, and has been named the #1 U.S. Cable & Satellite analyst for each of the past seven years in Institutional Investor Magazine's All-America Research Team poll. He has also been ranked among the top three Telecommunications analysts in the U.S. in Institutional Investor Magazine's All-America Research Team poll each of the past three years, holding the #1 spot in 2011. Prior to joining Bernstein, Moffett was the President of Sothebys.com, the e-commerce venture of the venerable auction house. He was previously a Partner at The Boston Consulting Group, where he spent eleven years and led the firm's global telecommunications practice. He received a BA Phi Beta Kappa from Brown University in 1984 and an MBA with Honors from Harvard Business School in 1989.
Moffett Research brings together five seasoned investment professionals – Moffett, Patrick O'Connell, Ethan Steinberg, John Towers, and David Cielusniak – each of whom brings more than a decade of investment advisory experience. Four of the founding partners – Moffett, O'Connell, Towers, and Steinberg – were previously colleagues at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co, LLC. The group left Bernstein together in January 2013 along with Nicholas Del Deo, the senior member of Moffett's research team. They are joined by attorney David Cielusniak, formerly of Conquest Capital Group, who will serve as the firm's General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer, and Chief Operating Officer.
"Small is beautiful," says Moffett. "I think you're going to see a lot of smaller boutiques like ours over the next few years." The formation of Moffett Research follows the creation of a bevy of successful boutique research start-ups in recent years, including Ed Wolfe's Wolfe Research (which started with the transportation sector), Ivy Zelman's Zelman & Associates (housing), and Dana Telsey's Telsey Advisory Group (retail). Just last week, Economist Nancy Lazar and Strategist François Trahan announced that they will be leaving their respective firms to start their own boutique. "The research model is fragmenting," according to Moffett.
John Towers worked as an Institutional Salesman at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. for 17 years. John earned a B.A. from Denison University, an MBA from Fordham University, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
Patrick O'Connell was a Managing Director and Senior Vice President at Bernstein for 11 years. He had previously worked in Business Development for Internet start-up Atlas Commerce and before that at both Goldman Sachs and NBC. Pat earned his BA from Colgate University and received an MBA from Kellogg at Northwestern University.
Ethan Steinberg will lead the firm's West Coast office. He spent ten years in Institutional Sales at Bernstein. Ethan is a member of the California Bar, and began his professional career practicing transactional law before leaving to found an educational software company. He subsequently held a number of senior sales and business development positions at venture-backed technology companies in Silicon Valley. Ethan holds a BA from Brandeis University, from which he graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, and earned a JD degree from Stanford Law School where he was a Law Review editor.
David Cielusniak spent six years at Conquest Capital Group, where he was the General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer, and Chief Operating Officer. Prior to Conquest, Mr. Cielusniak was counsel to the Alternative Investment Divisions at Credit Suisse and Lehman Brothers. He holds a BSBA from Georgetown University and a JD from the Fordham University School of Law.
