TransAlt's Bike Commuter Challenge Returns for Bike Month 2017

Thousands of New Yorkers share the joy of commuting on two wheels

NEW YORK, May 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Bike Month is underway, and thousands of employees of New York City workplaces are taking part in the Bike Commuter Challenge, produced by leading cycling, walking, and public transit advocacy group Transportation Alternatives. Participants compete to see which workplaces will have the highest percentage of bike commuters from May 1 to May 31. It's free, with great prizes, and anyone can create or join a team at bikemonth.nyc.

"The Challenge is the perfect way to introduce people to the joy of commuting on two wheels, and it also helps employers build a positive, healthy workplace culture that starts with employees having fun getting to work," said Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives. "As workers compete for the title of 'Bikingest Office,' they also get a new perspective on New York City streets and what needs to happen to make them safer for cycling."

TransAlt will be cheering on participants along nine popular bike routes in all five boroughs the morning of May 15th. Commuters are invited to stop for free coffee, snacks from Clif Bar, giveaways, and information on Transportation Alternatives' advocacy work.

More than 2,000 riders have already signed up, representing more than 450 employers as diverse in mission and size as Bloomberg LP, ConEd, JP Morgan Chase, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Google NYC, Etsy, PS 95 of Brooklyn, Carnegie Hall, DoSomething.org and the Lower East Side Ecology Center.

On May 19th, Citi Bike will lead a Best Dressed Commuter Ride, presented by Men's Wearhouse, culminating at TransAlt's annual Bike Home from Work Party. TransAlt Bike Month Participants ride from Downtown Manhattan and through the streets of Brooklyn, leading to an under-the-stars blowout at the Dumbo Loft and Triangle in Brooklyn. Admission is free, with more than 30 food, drink, and retail experience vendors animating this outdoor festival.
