THE WOODLANDS, Texas, Feb. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As oil prices continue to decline and companies look for ways to reduce costs, one company in the energy sector is betting that that their conversion technology will take off and make an impact in the E&P sector. TRF Energy Solutions' dual-fuel systems have been estimated to save operators hundreds of thousands of dollars a year while maintaining production levels and meeting more stringent environmental standards.
In today's competitive fuel market, natural gas is plentiful, cost-effective and environmentally friendlier than other fuels such as diesel. With current market fluctuations, diesel is relatively inexpensive and the price is down from this time last year. However, Troy McCarter, Conversions Coordinator, TRF Energy Solutions expects the prices to rebound, making natural gas even more attractive.
By incorporating dual-fuel technology in high-horsepower applications, diesel can be displaced with natural gas, by up to 70 percent, thus reducing harmful gaseous emissions including hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. McCarter said, "Dual-fuel technology allows engines to run on a combination of both diesel and natural gas, allowing companies the flexibility to choose which fuel to use based on cost, supply levels and operation."
TRF Energy Solutions is unique in that it can provide a fully integrated system to capture and process gas for high-horsepower fueling as it has done for some of the largest customers in North America, including Chesapeake Energy, Shell Oil and Weatherford. TRF Energy Solutions has converted more than 80 dual-fuel drilling rig and pressure pumping engines and operates in all the major shale plays within the US.
"As with all new technologies trying to make an impact in the oilfield, the integration of these conversion kits comes down to cost," said McCarter. "However, within one month, you will start to see substantial savings." Additionally, the advantage to conversions is clear; not only will companies enjoy long-term savings, but also reduce their impact at the well site and surrounding areas, improve their environmental footprint and enhance equipment reliability.
Most dual-fuel conversions have involved retrofits of existing diesel engines because of the large number of diesel-only engines already in the field and the relative ease of the retrofit procedure. For example, McCarter said that his company typically can complete a single engine conversion in one day without causing any drilling downtime. For those companies that prefer to enter the market with the technology in place, TRF Energy Solutions can equip new rigs with dual-fuel engines from the onset.
"As technology evolves and the price of natural gas continues to decrease, I think you will see more companies utilizing dual-fuel technology for their equipment," McCarter added. Additionally, the upcoming Tier 4 emissions standards will likely result in increased support for the widespread substitution of natural gas for diesel.
TRF Energy is the leader in all-fuels solutions for high-horsepower natural gas fueling solutions including onsite fueling for drilling, pressure pumping and other industrial applications with LNG, CNG and field gas. The company provides a variety of options to meet the remote power generation needs of oil and gas producers for well site operations and provides equipment for flare mitigation though liquids capture and NGL monetization.
Based in The Woodlands, Texas, TRF Energy has a strong presence in the Gulf Coast, Rockies, Permian, Eagle Ford, Bakken, Mid-Continental and Appalachian Regions.
