SONORA, Calif., July 25, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- While a portion of Yosemite National Park is temporarily closed to visitors, over 50% of the Park is still open to explore. Apart from the Valley Floor, there are plenty of awe-inspiring vistas and activities in and around the park to encourage visitors not to give up their trip of a lifetime to Yosemite National Park. However, visitors heading to the area are urged to take a second look at their reservations.
When the National Park Service issued a temporary closure of the Yosemite Valley Floor and Wawona today, Wednesday, July 25, 2018 due to health and safety issues related to the Ferguson Fire, visitors were asked to be out of the area by noon. In lieu of this temporary closure, a third party booking company mistakenly canceled lodging reservations in surrounding areas including Tuolumne County. This error has affected over seven hundred room reservations in the area. Lodging in Tuolumne County is open and not affected by the temporary closures of the Yosemite Valley and Wawona areas of the park. The northern portion of Yosemite, including Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias, Tuolumne Meadows, and other areas along the Tioga Road remain open and accessible via Highway 120.
Those who have received a cancellation notice from a third party online booking company for tonight and the upcoming nights in this area are urged to contact the lodging property directly to check on the status of the reservation and to re-book if necessary. Executive Director of the Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau, Lisa Mayo, comments, "We know that visiting Yosemite is very special and for some visitors, this is their trip of a lifetime, so we are trying to do everything we can to give them the best experience possible under the circumstances."
Visitors heading to the area should consider that there could be smoky conditions due to the Ferguson Fire, which could be heavy at times and variable throughout our area. During times of heavy smoke, visitors should be prepared to limit any strenuous outdoor activity.
