Turkish Americans Walk For Reconciliation With Armenian Americans
#PeaceWalk2015
WASHINGTON, April 14, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Turkish American community will join in solidarity to march for Turkish-Armenian reconciliation in PeaceWalk2015, which will take place on April 24, 2015. Members of over 250 Turkish American national and local organizations will walk from the White House to the Turkish Embassy. Also joining in PeaceWalk2015 will be other heritage communities, including but not limited to Albanian, Azeri, Bosnian, Egyptian, Ahıska, Central Asian Turkic, Afghan, Macedonian, Pakistani, Somali, Syrian and others.
Organized by the Turkish American Steering Committee (TASC), which comprises national and local Turkish American public advocacy and commercial associations, PeaceWalk2015 looks beyond labels to the broader human tragedy of World War I and the events of 1915.
PeaceWalk2015 calls for reconciliation, not accusatory Congressional resolutions or Presidential Statements. PeaceWalk2015 calls for unity among Americans of diverse backgrounds, not division.
A 24-hour vigil in front of the Turkish Embassy and Turkish Ambassador's Residence will remember all who perished in the Ottoman Armenian Conflict of 1885-1919, and victims of modern violent extremism.
At 8am on April 24, 2015, PeaceWalk2015 participants will gather on Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House, and proceed to the Turkish Ambassador's Residence and finally to the Turkish Embassy at 2525 Massachusetts Avenue.
Throughout the day of April 24 until 6pm, PeaceWalk2015 supporters will assemble in front of the Turkish Ambassador's Residence and in front of the Turkish Embassy.
PeaceWalk2015 encourages people of Turkish and Armenian heritage to conduct an honest assessment of the facts and build a narrative that does justice to the tragedies suffered by both peoples. TASC has launched an ad campaign at Washington DC Metro train stations and on Metro buses promoting Turkish-Armenian reconciliation.
