NEW YORK, Nov. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- "We trace Wall Street's lack of interest in the micro-cap group to broker/dealers' fixation on trading volume and investment banking opportunities," declares Peter Sidoti, founder and CEO of his eponymous firm, which added micro-cap stocks to its hefty small-cap coverage nearly three years ago and is gearing up for its sixth Semi-Annual Micro-Cap Conference. Mr. Sidoti notes, "That is how they make their money, but our focus is investment fundamentals, because that is how our clients make money."
In addition to the conference, slated for January 7, 2013 in New York City, the firm announced it hired a 20th analyst to cover stocks in the sub-$250 million capitalization ("micro-cap") sector. Sidoti's effort to enlighten investors on the merits of these stocks is going full-throttle, with the firm ever more committed to being Wall Street's "axe" on these names. Sidoti micro-cap conferences are well-known for showcasing companies that are largely unfamiliar to the Street, but have sound fundamentals and intriguing stories, show fast growth and profitability, or otherwise hold promise. A full-time Sidoti marketing team now focuses on the sector, coordinating 116 non-deal road shows for micro-cap companies year-to-date in 2012; more than 250 are slated for 2013. Sidoti micro-cap analyst Joe Munda was recently named No. 1 analyst in the medical equipment category in The Wall Street Journal's 2012 Best on the Street survey, primarily based on his buy rating for Staar Surgical, a California-based company that makes equipment used in minimally-invasive eye surgery.
Sidoti's inaugural Micro-Cap Conference, in January 2010, was something of an experiment. The firm was aware that thousands of micro-cap names meet or exceed large-cap companies in terms of favorable P/E ratios, strong cash flow, and low debt, but figured it would be a challenge to spread that message. However, feedback from the first gathering was superior, and each year interest grows. Investors now regard Sidoti's Micro-Cap Conferences as a "must-attend," and presenters usually re-up in order to gain even more exposure for their companies.
By the end of 2013, Sidoti expects to cover 700 micro-cap companies and 720 small-cap names.
