Ubicom and Broadcom Enable Streaming HD Video on Embedded Android and Linux Platforms

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Ubicom® announced today that its solution for embedded multimedia products integrates a Broadcom® Crystal HD enhanced video accelerator. Video has increasingly stretched beyond the traditional use cases of TVs and computers to become the medium of choice for consumer and connected digital products.  The joint solution addresses emerging applications that previously relied on embedded computers to address their specific requirements, and is delivered on Ubicom's IP8500 family of multithreaded processors and the BCM70015 advanced media processor. Ubicom and Broadcom will be demonstrating these solutions at their respective suites at CES 2011.

Ubicom's embedded Android and Linux platforms take advantage of processors built using the multi-threaded UBICOM32™ architecture, offering efficiency and flexibility. The software platforms offer a standard open programming model through industry standard distributions and tools. The reference design platforms offer customers quick access to solutions for new and emerging markets through complete system software stacks.

Broadcom's BCM70015 Crystal HD advanced media processor offloads all the video processing functions from the applications processor. The media processor decodes all popular formats in HD and SD, thus enabling the support of popular internet streaming video services as well as embedded video content. The hardware decoder guarantees high resolution without frame drops or jitter. Support for encoding will be added shortly, thus enabling video conferencing applications which are starting to emerge as populations become geographically spread out.

Availability

The two companies will demonstrate the solution at CES 2011 in Las Vegas, NV. The reference design platforms will be available to customers starting in January 2011.
