What to Expect on the Picket Line
Student health doctors from five Southern California campuses will be joined by UC students, fellow UC workers, and concerned community members on the picket lines at UCLA. Doctors will be wearing white coats and carrying picket signs. There will be a plane towing a banner in support of picketing doctors flying above the picket lines. In addition to discussing the ULPs behind the strike, doctors will be communicating with students and parents about the important role that student health centers play on campus.
Background
Despite ample opportunity to do so, UC has not remedied any of the unfair labor practice (ULP) charges that the Union of American Physicians and Dentists (UAPD) has filed against them during the on-going negotiations for a first contact for student health center doctors. For this reason UC doctors have called their second strike of 2015. The doctors' January strike was the first strike by fully-licensed US doctors in the last 25 years.
On the Southern California UC campuses (Los Angeles, San Diego, Irvine, Riverside, and Santa Barbara), the strike begins on Saturday, April 11th at 7:00 am and end on Wednesday April 15th at 7:00 am. On the Northern California campuses (Berkeley, San Francisco, Davis, Santa Cruz, and Merced) the strike began on Thursday, April 9th at 7:00 am and lasts until Monday, April 13th at 7:00 am. Northern California doctors picked at UC Berkeley's Tang Center on Thursday.
Student health doctors are often the first responders in cases of sexual violence among students, and play an important role in identifying and containing outbreaks of contagious diseases on campus. They also provide the mental health care that is critical to a substantial portion of UC students. UC doctors recently launched a website, www.uchealthexposed.org, to draw attention to and hopefully remedy the ways in which UC has failed to prioritize healthcare services for students.
