UCAIug Releases Version 2.0 of the Home Area Network (HAN) System Requirements Specification
Important Contribution to Enable the Smart Grid
RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The UCA International Users Group (UCAIug) has released the second version of the Home Area Network (HAN) System Requirement Specification (SRS), a document designed to promote the use of open standards to foster interoperability for HAN devices and smart grid applications.
"This effort, which included representatives from many parts of the smart grid industry, is proof that the smart grid community can effectively collaborate to produce a document which provides input to other standards organizations which are working on customer premise standards," says Erich Gunther, UCAIug board member and chair of the OpenHAN Task Force.
In addition to defining the system requirements for a Home Area Network (HAN), the document addresses how devices join a premises network, the security in the network, architectural scenarios, and special applications like plug-in-electric vehicles, energy management systems, and distributed energy resources (e.g. solar, wind, etc.). The HAN SRS includes over 250 high level requirements, including requirements for applications, communications, security, performance, operations and maintenance. The HAN SRS v2.0 work effort leveraged the work being done by the Cyber Security Working Group, a working group of the NIST Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP), as well as other smart grid work efforts including the Gridwise Architectural Council, Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and the Smart Grid Interoperability Program (SGIP) Priority Action Plans of the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST).
Over 130 individuals representing over 80 companies and organizations collaborated for 10 months to complete the project. The document has been approved by the OpenSG Technical Committee and is now available for public use.
"This document will be a useful tool for energy service providers, who are looking to offer smart grid programs and products to customers," says Mary Zientara, Director, Strategy and Development at Reliant Energy who led the HAN SRS v2.0 effort.
UCA International Users Group, headquartered in Raleigh, NC, is a not-for-profit corporation focused on enabling utility integration through the deployment of open standards by providing a forum in which the various stakeholders in the utility industry can work cooperatively together as members of a common organization to 1) Influence, select, and/or endorse open and public standards appropriate to the utility market based upon the needs of the membership; 2) Specify, develop and/or accredit product/system-testing programs that facilitate the field interoperability of products and systems based upon these standards; and 3) Implement educational and promotional activities that increase awareness and deployment of these standards in the utility industry.
The mission of the OpenSGug Technical Subcommittee within UCAIug is to foster enhanced functionality, lower costs and speed market adoption of Advanced Metering networks and Demand Response solutions through the development of an open standards-based information/data model, reference design & interoperability guidelines.
