Ukrainian Government Prepares to Send Army Cadets to the Front Line

According to reliable sources close to the Ukrainian Government, an order from the new defence Minister General-Colonel Mykhailo Koval will pre-release about 700 officer cadets at the National Defence University of Ukraine in order to bolster troop numbers on the front line with Russia, to take effect within the next 24 hours.

"The cadets will receive officers' epaulettes and this move isn't without precedent. I think it was Solzhenitsyn who observed that in 1914 his character Vorotyntsev put on his officers' stars a term early."

"So when a country graduates its officer cadets - well, a term early - that's an indicator of some sort of genuine or perceived military emergency. When I was at Sandhurst, if I'd been released from that place a term early and given command, I'd have been over the moon!"

"These young officers, graduating early, are also vital for the Ukrainian Army as it currently has a 60 percent shortage of junior officers. But this latest move won't necessarily provide the Ukrainian Government with sufficient soldiers - or military expertise - in order to repel a Russian army incursion in the Region," observes Professor Chris Bellamy, a leading expert on Russian military history and affairs.

The move comes as negotiations between Russia and US for a negotiated settlement to the Ukrainian crisis begins to falter and the Ukrainian Army plans for an armed conflict on its border.

According to the source, the move comes in the wake of a request from the US Government that has agreed to fund and provide training for the formation of a new military academy in the Ukraine. The bloodless transition of power in Crimea has now switched priorities to the establishment of a National Guard.
