Ulwelling Siddiqui LLP Announces Federal Jury Awards Plaintiff $890,100 in Case Against Riverside County Sheriff's Department and Deputy Sheriff for "Excessive Force."
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- On November 20, 2014, a federal jury in the United States District Court (Central Dist. of California) awarded Plaintiff James L. Compton $890,100 in an excessive force case against Defendants County of Riverside Sheriff's Dept. and Deputy Sheriff Leonardo Perez. [COMPTON v. COUNTY OF RIVERSIDE SHERIFF'S DEPT et al., US District Court Case # CV 10-07490 BRO (DTBx); Hon. Judge Beverly Reid O'Connell].
As prevailing party, Plaintiff Compton will seek to recover fees and costs in an amount well over $500,000+. If granted, the total judgment would be over $1.5 Million.
The Jury found that Riverside County Deputy Perez violated Compton's Civil and Constitutional rights on September 6, 2009, by using excessive force. At trial, Plaintiff Compton alleged that Deputy Perez drove him to a dark and secluded place and beat him severely while he was restrained by other Deputy Sheriffs. Plaintiff claimed damages arising from the use of excessive force, assault, battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The Jury rendered a swift verdict in favor of Plaintiff and awarded compensatory and punitive damages. The Jury further found that Deputy Perez acted maliciously.
High-profile trial Attorney Omar A. Siddiqui, counsel for Plaintiff stated, "We are very pleased with the jury's verdict. The jury has spoken loud and clear that police brutality and excessive force will not be tolerated. The badge worn by our police is a symbol of public trust, the breach of which will have serious consequences." Co-counsel James K. Ulwelling stated, "Juries will figure out the truth and will not blindly accept an officer's version of events. Nobody is above the law and everybody will be held accountable for their actions."
Plaintiff Compton was represented by the law firm Ulwelling Siddiqui LLP. Defendants were represented by the law firms of Lewis Brisbois Bisgaard & Smith LLP and Arias & Lockwood APLC.
