WASHINGTON, 15 de mayo de 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Según un nuevo análisis publicado por la Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, las compañías de tabaco y cigarrillos electrónicos están sacando provecho de la crisis del COVID-19 para anunciar sus productos dañinos y adictivos en las redes sociales, socavar las restricciones de edad mínima de compra destinadas a proteger a los jóvenes, y hacer afirmaciones sobre la salud no comprobadas e ilegales. El análisis incluye tácticas de las grandes tabacaleras, los fabricantes de cigarrillos electrónicos y las tiendas de vapeo en 28 países.

En las redes sociales, Philip Morris International y British American Tobacco, las dos compañías tabacaleras más grandes del mundo, se están apropiando del popular hashtag "Quédate en casa" promovido por gobiernos y autoridades sanitarias para comercializar, en su lugar, productos de tabaco calentado como Glo e IQOS y cigarrillos electrónicos como Vype. En España, British American Tobacco publicó fotos anunciando los cigarrillos electrónicos Vype acompañados por el hashtag #FrenaLaCurva y, en Italia, Philip Morris utilizó #DistantiMaVicini (#LejosPeroCerca) para publicitar IQOS. Las compañías también han promovido series de música en casa y han lanzado videos musicales exclusivos para promocionar productos de tabaco en línea.

En los Estados Unidos, los fabricantes de cigarrillos electrónicos y las tiendas de vapeo también recurrieron a las redes sociales para promocionar sus productos e impulsar las ventas durante la crisis del COVID-19. Las promociones relacionadas con la pandemia van desde mascarillas gratuitas con la compra de cigarrillos electrónicos hasta la oferta de descuentos COVID-19 ("Obtenga un 19% de descuento en líquidos electrónicos de nicotina ingresando el código COVID-19"). Los fabricantes de cigarrillos electrónicos también han utilizado la pandemia para hacer afirmaciones de salud no demostradas e ilegales sobre los cigarrillos electrónicos.
