United Communities Against Poverty, Inc. (UCAP) Board Membership Opportunities
CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- United Communities Against Poverty, Inc. (UCAP), a progressive nonprofit organization, seeks individuals interested in serving as a volunteer board member. UCAP is governed by a uniquely structured tripartite volunteer board of directors, comprised equally of elected public officials, private sector representatives, and low-income representatives. This structure is designed to promote the participation of the entire community in assessing local needs and helping Prince Georgian residents overcome the causes and conditions of poverty.
Qualifications for board members are as follows: 1) must either work or live in Prince George's County; 2) able to meet the last Wednesday evening of each month; and 3) meet the representative requirement of the tripartite board. A special training for current and prospective board members is scheduled for Friday, September 24th 6pm – 8pm; and Saturday September 25th 8am – 4pm.
UCAP was incorporated as a nonprofit agency in July 1965; and then became the designated Community Action Agency for Prince George's County, Maryland in 1978. This past fiscal year UCAP assisted 9,866 residents of Prince George's County by providing services in the areas of nutritional aide, housing, homelessness, employment and education. Listed are a few accomplishments:
- 560 women and children were sheltered at Shepherd's Cove, a 100-bed emergency shelter for homeless;
- 115 Individuals Graduated from the newly implemented and highly acclaimed Green Industry Certification Program;
- 38,927 meals were served to homeless women and children;
- 537 households received non-perishable items to feed a family of four for five days through our Food Pantry;
- 147 individuals accepted employment opportunities as a result of receiving employment assistance; and
- 87 Homes were saved from foreclosure as a result of housing counseling.
