Sikhs voiced their concerns in DC by meeting with over 20 members of Congress, members of the Executive branch to advocate for Sikh civil and human rights at the 4th UNITED SIKHS Annual Sikh Summit from Oct 1st – Oct 3rd. In wake of the killings in Wisconsin, the community allayed their fears and concerns of growing hate crimes and Xenophobia against Sikhs and other people of color that go unreported as a statistic.
Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-32), said, "The Sikhs are a wonderful people and are a proud nation. I am glad to issue a proclamation on the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Stockton Gurdwara."
Harpreet Singh, Regional Policy Director for UNITED SIKHS said, "We look forward to working with the new government on the issue of Sikhs serving in the Armed forces. The facts of egregious violations of religious freedom internationally provided by the USCIRF shouldn't be side stepped by US foreign policy. The Global Sikh Civil Rights Report highlights such violations by countries."
"I look forward in assisting my Sikh fellow Americans. I have known the Sikh community for years," said Congressman Rush Holt, NJ-12.
One of the participants from Seattle said, "I am asked to take off my turban at airports. I wait for hours with no reason given for my delay. Airlines have disparate information, one puts me on no-fly-list and another allows me to board the next available flight after waiting for 4 hours and losing my connecting flight. Hopefully authorities at TSA will listen to my plea filed by UNITED SIKHS."
Birmohan Singh, Regional Director of UNITED SIKHS, said, "The President must make it a national priority to respond to violent domestic extremism, in ways consistent with our commitment to civil liberties. The US Congress owes to the families of those killed in Wisconsin, the dignity of being an accountable statistic. Till then hate crimes against Sikhs will be unaccounted."
"Sikhs will vote for those, who will stop the spreading of hate and create more jobs," said, 65 year old Bhakshish Singh, ex-chairman of Washington Gurdwara (DC).
