United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) Joins Education Groups In Opposing Prop 46
CA's largest local organization of public school teachers says Prop 46 hurts public education & causes "unnecessary drain on tax revenue"
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Sept. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the growing campaign to defeat November's most controversial measure– Prop 46, which would substantially raise health costs for consumers, taxpayers, state and local governments and public school districts – was officially joined by the United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA).
With more than 35,000 members, UTLA is the second-largest teachers union local in the nation.
They join other major public-school organizations in opposing Prop 46 as a threat to public-education funding, including: California Teachers Association (CTA), California School Boards Association (CSBA) and the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA).
"If we are going to give Los Angeles students the schools they deserve, we can't afford to pass a ballot measure which is going to cause an increase in health costs, an unnecessary drain on tax revenue and potentially divert funds from public education," said Alex Caputo-Pearl, President of UTLA. "Prop 46 is bad medicine for California's public schools and teachers."
California's independent Legislative Analyst has reaffirmed in its official analysis that Proposition 46 could increase state and local government costs by up to "several hundred million dollars annually."
