United Way and Campaign for Working Families Provide Free Tax Assistance to Community
PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 29, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania and the Campaign for Working Families have officially kicked off the tax season through the Philly My Free Taxes Campaign, which provides free tax preparation assistance to low-income workers throughout the community. The self-preparation tool, MyFreeTaxes.com/Philly, is available throughout tax season at Campaign for Working Families' Mobile Tax Team sites. IRS-certified volunteers work with qualified taxpayers to help them file their own state and federal taxes for free.
"My Free Taxes is an incredible initiative that has a tremendous impact on families throughout our region working to improve their financial stability," says Jill Michal, president and CEO, United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania. "Through this program, more families are able to access tax credits that would have been left on the table, providing a much-needed boost to their household incomes."
My Free Taxes will also offer all taxpayers earning less than $57,000 access to a free online tax filing tool at MyFreeTaxes.com/Philly. Through this website, taxpayers are guided through the steps of filing their own taxes.
"The IRS estimates that approximately 20 percent of eligible individuals and families are unaware that they qualify to receive valuable tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)," says Khadijah Jones, Director, Campaign for Working Families. "The EITC can play a critical role in helping lift families out of poverty."
The Philly My Free Taxes Campaign is made possible through the generous support of Wal-Mart Foundation, in partnership with United Way Worldwide and One Economy.
