Urban Scrubs Camp Engages High School Students in Healthcare Opportunities
MINNEAPOLIS, July 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Urban Scrubs Camp, a healthcare camp for high school students being held at Augsburg College from August 1 to 5, is dedicated to promoting health careers among young people in order to meet a growing need for an increased number of healthcare workers. Students from the Cedar Riverside neighborhood and across the state are being given a rare opportunity to learn directly from healthcare professionals while participating in hands-on activities in a variety of healthcare fields such as dentistry, nursing, physical fitness, public health, emergency medicine and many more. "The practitioners are excited to come to Urban Scrubs Camp to show students the many career possibilities healthcare offers," said Jane Foote, executive director of HeatlhForce Minnesota.
With success from previous Scrubs Camps at Winona State University, the expansion of the camp to the metro area gives more students the opportunity to participate. Not only is Urban Scrubs Camp offering students the chance to explore the world of medicine inside the classroom, but field trips will allow for a diverse summer camp experience. Students will tour the Dental School at the University of Minnesota, learn about water quality testing and explore Native American herbal medicine at Snelling State Park.
The SimLab L1 from Ridgewater College will roll into the Twin Cities for students to experience state-of-the-art simulation scenarios. This traveling educational laboratory is one of the most advanced mobile training facilities in the nation, serving also as a triage unit, if needed, in times of disaster. The community is invited and encouraged to view the SimLab on Tuesday, August 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. near the Augsburg College Edor-Nelson Athletic Field.
Urban Scrubs Camp, created by HealthForce Minnesota, is sponsored this year by Augsburg College, the Cedar Riverside Partnership, Fairview Health Systems and the University of Minnesota to bring students this opportunity. In addition to partner support, a number of organizations donated scholarships to help students attend camp.
The camp has reached its full capacity of 80 students plus an additional wait list. For more information about Scrubs Camp and HealthForce Minnesota please contact Lynn James at 952-250-8753 or visit www.healthforceminnesota.org.
