"Our release of ure-Na seems to be very timely considering the recent publication of the European Clinical Practice Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of hyponatremia," said Caroline von Scheven of Nephcentric LLC, the developer and manufacturer of ure-Na.
Oral urea has been available as a therapeutic option for decades, but has not been well adopted in the US because of the strong bitter taste. The European clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of hyponatremia, published in 2014, recommend the use of oral urea as a preferred treatment option for hyponatremia due to SIADH.
Urea has been studied in many different clinical settings and for various lengths of therapy, with excellent efficacy and safety. Unlike other therapeutic options, urea does not have the risk of hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity or osmotic demyelination syndrome.
"Our mission when developing ure-Na was to bring a therapeutic option to patients and medical professionals that is safe and cost effective. We spent a great deal of time and effort to develop the flavor while masking the bitterness of urea," said Caroline.
Ure-Na, being a medical food, is available over the counter, but is to be used under medical supervision. Medical foods are regulated under the FDA Orphan Drug Act and are for the management of specific diseases. Urea is considered GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) ingredient by the FDA.
Ure-Na is currently available in a box of eight individually packaged doses for use in the inpatient and outpatient setting. More information and resources on the use of urea in hyponatremia and how to get ure-Na for patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting can be found at www.ure-na.com.
Nephcentric LLC focuses on cost effective, problem solving, needs-based therapeutic options for patients and physicians. Unlike a traditional biopharmaceutical company, which often relies on higher prices in the specialty space, Nephcentric relies on a lower cost, high efficiency model to bring ure-Na and other products to the medical marketplace.
